Difference between FT-IR and FT-Raman?

Hello all!

I've noticed something by looking at the block diagrams of these instrument, that I do not understand at all.

Both of the insruments (FT-IR and FT-Raman) have a light source, an interferometer and a sample holder in them. However, in the IR case, the light gets modulated BEFORE hitting the sample, but in the Raman case, the light gets modulated AFTER it hit the sample.

What is the point of this? Why is is feasible to meet the sample before (or after) meeting the interferometet?

Cheers!
