Redwine from clear solution and quicker Cu2C2 synth


i recently discussed ways to enchance the production of Cu2C2 with Dornier
my original preparation was adding aluminium to copper chloride solution with HCl in it
this is approx a few minutes to react properly depending on amounts and concentrations
he got to that CuSO4, NaCl and ascorbic acid should be able to reduce the now formed CuCl2 into CuCl -- he was right

the product obtained from simply dumping the hot solution into water, thereafter decanting was pure white, ammonia solution was added to it, where it turned deep blue
he explained to me that the blue colour was CuCl2 impurities -- so i added some ascorbic acid and it had a few different reactions, forming CuCl and also some copper, the copper stage was just for some milliseconds and appeared as a brown part in the solution

it turned perfectly clear, supposedly because of the low amounts of CuCl2 in ammonia and CuCl used

seemingly it appears that Cu2C2 that has been in contact with Ca(OH)2 gets totally useless, putting a piece of CaC2 in filter paper and dumping it into the solution doesnt work either in any way, C2H2 must come from an external source if you want decent Cu2C2 --- anyhow this will just add safety to the next step

when you get this pure clear solution (which will be pale green to brownish yellow if you have strong concentrations, cant seem to remove the colour 100%) then you can dump in a tiny bit of CaC2, you really dont need much and nearly in an instant it will all turn into a red liquid that you cant see through, infact resembling red wine quite alot

i decided to post this because i recall having read on a chemistry forum once way back about a person which asked for a experiment to turn ''water into wine''
and i think i found it

i was pretty amazed at this, surely has 'show potential' supposing im not the only which has people coming to my door once in a while with time on their hands


credits goes to Dornier for thinking up the method of reducing CuCl2 with ascorbic acid, very efficient and quick method

Is the red colour a true solution or a suspension of red colloidal copper acetylide? Could the ascorbic acid be causing the colour by perhaps forming a complex with the copper acetylide? Does the colour persist for hours or days or does it eventually form a precipitate and settle?

it will eventually settle, im supposing its either more or less pure Cu2C2, so its actually a suspension but its quite small particles so it appears to be a solution, although its not clear, as when you dissolve lead salts in tap water

i doubt it forms a complex, i cannot reject it although, but im supposing its mainly Cu2C2 and perhaps even copper metal
