Is that alumina or what ?

Hi, I'm new here, please be patient with me because I'm not an expert :)
Recently I dissolved some scrap Al in NaOH to make some sodium aluminate for
other experiments. When the mix cooled down I removed the excess unreacted Al
and I was left with a clear liquid (which should be a solution of NaAlO2) but also a lot of
very fine white powder as precipitate. I carefully filtered and collected the two
compounds and I dried the precipitate. I suppose it is alumina, but strangely enough
this powder does not react at all neither with strong HCl nor H2SO4, not even
with heat. Same thing by adding excess NaOH, it doesn't react. Any idea ???
I would like to make something useful out of it or understand what compound it
actually is... thanks !
