Toxic substance from NI3 and acetone?
as title hints, NI3 and acetone..
i decided that i wanted to store NI3 under water, where i then scoop it into acetone to then be placed somewhere to dry (which goes very fast when wet
with acetone)
anyhow i dumped some NI3 (wet) in a aluminium bowl, and added acetone, to see if it would disintegrate, the solution became more and more orange'ish
some time ago i tried to burn it off when soaked on a piece of paper
i got some feeling randomly some hours ago on my eyes, like very weak pain in the eyes, like when you cut onions, but not as intense although
i have now taken a drop of the orange liquid, it burns, and leaves behind some oily dark orange sirup, doesnt burn or go bang or anything..
i just felt the same thing with my eyes, just stronger as i poured the liquid in a larger surface glass container to dry out
i was considering to ask for this earlier today, as its not advised to store NI3 under acetone, but it wasnt stated WHY..
so anybody got a clue on what i managed to create?? it doesnt feel healthy for sure

''just made some iodoacetone today... lots of close call on that topics without ever been spot on.....i think
i distilled 0.3 g of iodine with 80 ml of acetone and a drop of HCl....
the first pic is before
and the resulting tear gas...
yes it is a tear gas
quite potent i might add....
iodine coms add itself on the end of the propanone molecule to make just like chlorine and bromine a tear gas .
this one doesnt smell like anything but trust me when i tell you ..IT HURTS!
lots of threat on the subject i know but some how never quite spot on .
everybody has cleaned iodine stain with acetone .
it works great yes ...BUT whoever has done so knows the painful feeling of this smelless compound.
i`ve done this sinthesis many years ago and the distillate was clear, so..
i probably should distil it one more time when i am all alone in the house so i can evacuate if anything goes wrong... ''

Same is true with I2/isopropanol mix I use to disinfect wounds ... it is antibacterial and antifungal.
Somehow it is lacrymatory... probably because some I2 oxydizes the isopropanol into propanone and then yields some iodopropanone (iodoacetone).
If you make CTAP with concentrated HCl H2O2 and acetone not in the cold... runnaway reaction forms chloraceton in a strong lacrymatory boiling fog
