Is nitromethane hygroscopic?
Hi there,
I read different opinions now. Is nitromethane hygroscopic or not?
RC fuel is spoiled rather fast when stored in plastic bottles, but that's mostly the methanol, that stuff is hygroscopic for sure.
I have very few glasbottles left, but I want my nitro to be storage stable for long times. Can I safe the glasbottle this time?

I've overlooked some MSDS data sheets and a Mereck Index and the only nitromethane that was shown to be hygroscopic was deuterated nitromethane.
However, yes you are correct both methanol, and ethanol are hygroscopic.
Can I safe the glasbottle this time?
I'm trying to decipher your question...
It shouldn't hurt your Nitromethane to store it in a PP container for a short period.

We've got circa 20 liter of nitromethane in the lab and non of it absorbed significant amount of water through the years (there are 25-30 year old
bottles also).
If you keep them closed, far away from the bathtub, then there will be no problem.
I have a blog where I post my pictures from my work: http://labphoto.tumblr.com/
-Pictures from chemistry, check it out(:

If I remember correctly, NM is just a little hygroscopic. But it will only absorb about 1-2% water from that atmosphere. The bigger worry is about the
NM slowly evaporating out.
I'm not saying let's go kill all the stupid people...I'm just saying lets remove all the warning labels and let the problem sort itself out.

Thank you.
I asked, because I simply dont have enough glas bottles at the moment

In this case i think I already has the 2% in it because it came in a plastic bottle. A few weeks more wont hurt then.
