Lead Nitrate
I have a question about making lead nitrate by dissolving lead oxide in nitric acid. I am wondering if a mixture of sulfuric acid and potassium
nitrate can be used as a substitute for the nitric acid.

Mixing equal masses of H2SO4 and KNO3 will give you HNO3 and KHSO4. You use an all glass retort to seperate the HNO3 from the KHSO4. Mixing PbO and
HNO3 should give you PbNO3 and H2O.

You can get away without distillation, if you have a lot of time. Place two glass or polyolefine containers inside a larger such container; one of
the smaller containers hold a nitrate and sulfuric acid while the other hold distilled water and lead(II) oxide, carbonate, or basic carbonate.
Close the outer container and leave it be for some time. Nitric acid will vapourise from the acid mix, and react with the lead oxide to form a
solution of lead nitrate; this can be considered a form of isothermal distillation.
It has the advantage that 'battery acid' or other moderately dilute sulfuric acid can be used, and that non-volatile ingredients in the acid will not
contaminate the nitrate being formed.
If you use a lead carbonate the outer container should have a hole a few cm diameter, sealed with thin polyolefine film; this allows the CO2 to
diffuse out.

How long do you reckon it would take for the nitric acid to evaporate over?
The slow release of CO2 could be harvested to make Basic Lead Carbonate.
You can make basic Lead Carbonate by putting Lead strips in a small amount of Acetic acid in (say) a bucket with a lid. CO2 is then fed in. Fermenting
wine was used in the old days.
The Lead Metal turns to Basic Lead Carbonate.
I am going off topic, perhaps you do not desire BLC.

I made a mistake, lead nitrate is Pb(NO3)2, not PbNO3.
