powder Al fromsanding
hi,
A friend of mine works with Al and he can give me some leftovers of it after sanding.
But the problam is (i think) that the Al is burned when he sanded it.
i mean that when you sand Al you get sparks and i think its not pure Al anymore.....
what can i do to make it pure?
do you thin its realy Al oxide?
thx

Depends on how its been sanded, it could be mostly Al, or entirly oxide.
One way to find out, would be to weigh an amount of aluminium, put it under water, invert a glass of water over it, and add sodium hydroxide. The
aluminium will produce hydrogen and sodium aluminate. Knowing the volume of hydrogen gas produced measure by keeping the liquid level inside the
glass the same as outside, and the weight of aluminium, gets you hot pure it is. you can do a blank test with a solid block of aluminium if you dont
want the hassle of the maths.
Not likley to be very accurate at a home test, but should be good enough to tell you if your wasting your time.
Wear gloves or the NaOH will do a number on your skin.

Its not just AL oxides you have to worry about but also bits of the belt that usually come of on it.

cutting is better
Personally I prefer shavings from cutting because there is less tool to product stock contact and you get a purer product. I would avoid sandings as
the sand may contain boron or ??? and would discolor any pyro mix. Try to get scrap from a band saw or jig saw or simular processing. Oh, never
hurst to wash with alcohol or acetone

Hmm, how about grinding with carbon?
I don't know the relative hardness of C versus Al, but if it works it should have some advantages.

Industrially AL powder is made by spraying molten AL into a coolling blanket of some sort.
The nano size stuff is made by electroexplosions and laser sublimation usually.Only know shit about electrexplosions( the average particle size for AL
that way is around 100nm).

No, there is no practical way IMHO to revive the Al sandings. (opinion based on effort)
Get some Al-paint and wash with acetone and bingo: 1a Al powder.
