Inhibitors used in hardware store sulfuric acid - would they interfere with dehydration reactions?


93% Sulfuric Acid is commonly sold at many hardware stores, but I am unable to find the MSDS online for the brands I have access to. I read in another thread here that occasionally thiourea or inorganic phosphates are used as inhibitors with respect to preventing dissolution of copper pipes (I think)

I need to generate some CO Gas through the dehydration of Formic Acid. Is it likely that the inhibitors present in these OTC Sulfuric Acid's interfere with this reaction, or am I worrying about nothing?

I don't think inhibitors will interfere.

If you're afraid that the organic ones might interfere, add a few mL (slowly) of 30% hydrogen peroxide to remove the organics. If you need 98% sulfuric acid, just boil off the water-sulfuric acid azeotrope outside. But as JJay says, they shouldn't interfere.
