purity of vanillin for tlc stain
I'm planning on trying vanillin as a tlc stain. I've found some 98% vanillin available and also 100%. The 98% is alot cheaper.
I'm wondering if the purity makes much difference?

vanillin is used as a melting point temperature reference
so it is probably easy to purify, by recrystalisation from water,
then check its melting point.

98% will be more than sufficient for the job.

Agreed. I've had decent results with tech grade. You should always run a standard (or surrogate compound) just to be sure; you need the RF, anyway.
