Topical Compendium: Discussion

I've started a new wiki-based Topical Compendium. One of the benefits of it being on the wiki is that anyone can edit it who has a wiki account, rather than it needing to be edited by a moderator. So far, I've transferred all of the original threads to it, and added a couple others that I could think of immediately. So far the Elements section is the only one with anything in it, as it is essentially the original compendium. The Energetic Materials section needs to be transferred too, but I figured that I should leave that for someone who is more knowledgeable about EM than I am to do.

If you add threads to the Topical Compendium, the only criterion is that the thread must contribute useful information about the topic that isn't covered in greater detail by another thread. For example, don't add every thread that mentions copper to the copper section of the Elements chapter, as there are many, many threads about copper chemistry but only a handful of valuable ones. The point of the Topical Compendium is to make those valuable threads easier to find.

Now, the purpose of this thread is to discuss the Topical Compendium in general: its layout, its formatting, its content. I'll start out by asking, does anyone have any issues with the current layout, or suggestions to improve it?

Would it be possible to reconfigure the Elements section to be in the shape of a Periodic Table, with links to each element page in the appropriate 'boxes'? That seems like a pretty convenient layout to me, but I don't know how/if it would work on a Wiki page.

I think that would be great, but it would be way beyond my current knowledge of wiki formatting to set that up.

Conspicuous by their absence are the boys from OC.

Added another page, will edit another and create two more later on.

Ok. I am impressed. Thanks for that aga. It looks like it took a while.

I am going to have to ask how you insert a table. I would like to put a table in my next edit of the wiki.

took about 3~4 hours, mostly learning how to get it to do what was required !

Wiki table syntax is awful. They basically go like this :-

{| class="wikitable"
|-
|row1,col1
|row1,col2
|-
|row2,col1
|row2,col2
|}

{| = start of a table. the class="wikitable" gives the default table format (optional)
|- = new row
| = data item for the current row
|} = end of a table

Table formatting is more fully explained here :-

Those edits took me few minutes, that's nothing beside your great effort:).

Nice periodic table man! I'm currently attempting to build a dynamic periodic table using React. No where near the 'dynamic' part yet... plus I realize now ive completely ignored CSS in the last year and a half that ibe been studing.. . lol can uou imagine how dry the internet would be without CSS... In fact i wager it would aomewhat worse thab 'a bit dry'... suicide would inrease about 20 fold i rekon lol
