DTGS Detectors

When a DTGS detector goes bad how do you know?
Does it gracefully degrade or simply stop working?
I ask because I have a Bomem MB104 FTIR spectrometer that is producing a low signal level [~0.5 V versus full scale 5 V].
Also, the reflector optics outside the sealed unit are very dirty. Can this knock the IR signal down this much?
How do I clean gold coated Al IR reflective optics?
