Aconitic acid synthesis - Explanation of extraction method
Page: http://www.orgsyn.org/demo.aspx?prep=CV2P0012#Ref14N3
Now to any experienced organic chemists, the procedure calls for conc. HCl. As this is part of the extraction process wouldn't the H-Cl react with the
double bond or is this why this part of the process is cooled in an ice bath.
Ref: http://www.chemguide.co.uk/organicprops/alkenes/hhal.html
What is the purpose/effect of, and what would be a safe molarity of HCl that would minimally/not react with the product?
What is the purpose/effect of the glacial acetic acid washes, in terms of the sulfates and "possible" chlorides present?
For anyone interested in my purpose for producing this chemical i have a post in the organic chemistry forums.

----------------------------SOLVED------------------------------------------------
The following page describes the procedure for the synthesis of aconitic acid but i am having trouble defining my reactants due to grammatical issues.
My interpretation of the chemicals in the round bottom flask:
1M of citric acid
115ml of 18M sulfuric acid [Edit]
105ml of water

Where on earth did you get the 2M sulfuric acid? Orgsyn calls for concentrated sulfuric acid.

"(115 cc., 2 moles) of concentrated sulfuric acid in 105 cc. of water"
or did it mean 115ml of 18M^
could you please write your interpretation in measured amounts please.

Moles and molarity are two different things.
OrgSyn preps are some of the most clearly written procedures available to a chemist. Just follow what it says to the letter.

"(115 cc., 2 moles)" what does it mean by the 2 mole part, 2 mole of what?
Never mind that i completely missed a density calculation and now the numbers make sense.
