I spayed the awful smelling stuff into a beaker up to 50ml. It was hard to keep it in the container well I was spraying but I got it all into the
beaker. Any way I used a wash bottle filled with water to add water into the beaker and as I expected it formed two layers. The bottom one was diethyl
ether and water, the other was heptane.
Heptane won't mix with the water but the ether will right?
Am I right?
If I am then I can distill or salt out the ether and use the heptane after drying?

Diethyl ether is not miscible with water, and neither is heptane. Distilling will, however, work perfectly for this! Just don't use an open flame or
approach the flash point .

See the fourth post in this thread, by garage chemist. Just fractionate the starting fluid.
