9-Bromoanthracene uses
About a year ago I acquired some organic chemicals from a friend. One of these was 9-Bromoanthracene, about a 0.5kg of the stuff. Does anyone know
what it is used for or alternatively have any suggestions as to interesting reaction that it might enter into? Who reactive is the bromine group
towards ammonia and hydroxide ions?
I did some searching on the internet and came up with a few papers, one investigating its formation of a Grignard reagent which it appears to form
very reluctantly and the other concerned the formation of 9,10 addition product similar to those formed by anthracene itself.
Turning it into anthraquinone would seem to be the best route but who reactive is the 9-bromo moiety? Alternatively any ideas on de-halogenation, the
one reference I can find (JCS 1949 p267) suggests that dehalogenation tends to lead to dianthryl, besides turning the 9-bromo compound back into
anthracene is a bit pointless as I already have some anthracene.
