Glass joints and tube outlets

I've noticed on my new glassware that the tube outlets for hoses and such (such as on the drying tube) and the tube that equalizes pressure on my addition funnel lead directly into the joints. I would assume that if a stopper or joint was put in there, the tube would no longer work (being blocked). If that's true, how do I use these things? I'd like to stopper up my addition funnel so gases don't escape, but I can't do that without blocking that tube... same with the drying tube.

There are special stoppers with a slit on the side which are used here. They work a bit like a valve so you can shut off the equalizing when you see fit.

Should always come with such a device but since lab-suppliers have only about 800% profitmarge left since the chinese came (from 1000%) they have to make a living, you must understand...
