Looking for Phenol

My eBay source for phenol has went dry :( does anyone here in Canada have a source for phenol to refer me to? The chemical suppliers that deal with individuals don't carry it sadly. If anyone has the ability to purchase it and is willing to forward it to me that could also be an option, for a surcharge for the trouble of course!

Thanks!

Well, if you like to make your own reagents, go buy a large bottle of aspirin (or buy sodium salicylate on ebay(cheaper)). And dry distill with sodium hydroxide in a stochiometrical excess, you should get crude phenol, you can then purify by standard mean. Decarboxylation of salicylate is known, I don't have a reference for it taught.

Hope it helped you somewhat.

I never asked for this.

Thanks! I do know of that route to phenol, and I do enjoy making my own reagents, but for phenol I just prefer buy it. I need about 250g or so for a few runs making salicylaldehyde which will take enough time in itself. Making that much from salicylates would be a pain, and phenol is pretty cheap too.

If you have a source of chlorobenzene, you could react that with sodium hydroxide to get your phenol. A procedure shouldn't be too hard to find.

No chlorobenzene either, damn! Just found one eBay person that sells it 15$/15g, that's stupid, as if anyone would buy phenol at that price.

Isn't that fennel? You should never confuse phenol with phenyl.

Oddly enough I have already contacted them and they told me that the hazardous materials I ordered (phenol being one of them) cannot be shipped to Canada even for an extra fee. This was by email though and I never spoke to them on the phone, maybe I should try again...
