What are commercial grade blasting caps made of ?

Wondering what the safest way to make a blasting cap is , is it necessary to press and pack the primary very tightly. I have been looking into detonating PETN with very high temperatures , does this actually work. Im just getting into making energetic materials and i would like to get to know as much as I can before I actually make the product. Can anyone give me alternatives to blast caps?

A quick search on google will give you a basic construction of various types of blasting caps/detonators.
The only substitute for a blasting cap/detonator is prima-cord or det-cord.

You DO NOT want to squeeze any primary too much especially if your well being.
Some primaries can be "dead pressed" and they don't go off at all.
