Iodine from EDDI?
Quite a while ago, Bbartlog posted the following: "A thought on iodine: it appears that ethylene diamine diiodide (aka EDDI) is sold as an animal
feed supplement, and at rather good prices (in terms of cost per unit of iodine). For example, one online source lists 400g of thesupplement for sale
for $7.32. I'm pretty sure that acidification and oxidation (H2SO4, or HCl+H2O2) would yield free iodine." Has anyone on SM done this iodine
extraction? It still looks like it may be a cost-effective method of obtaining elemental iodine.

yes, I think that would work. Iodide is really easy to oxidize to free iodine from solution.
I suppose adding something like lead (ii) for example would also precipitate the insoluble metallic iodide salts as well.
If this is possible its a great source of cheap iodine.
Ive calculated that 80.4% of the molar mass is iodine. from 400 gram of stuff you could in theory recover 321 g Iodine.........quite a bit for not
much money.

You must also keep in mind that this is not the pure compound, I would expect it to be like 4-8% by weigth.

Here it's 9.2%: http://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?pgguid=30e0794f-7b6a...
But yes, in general when you buy it you're not getting anything like 100% EDDI. Even so I believe this compares favorably to many other proposed
sources.
The less you bet, the more you lose when you win.
