hempel column
I was reading through the methanol purification subject and someone mentioned a 'hempel column' and using it for distillation of HEET, to purify it
from additives.
I typed "hempel column" and very little info came up on google.
Can someone tells me what this column is used for and in what type of conditions. I know what it looks like but don't know what its used for.
thanks in advance.

I did too, and got perfectly adequate
information. It was past the first ten links, though. Tenacity is a virtue.
My favorite one was a paper from 1917 that called the Hempel column "old-fashioned". The title is "The Recovery of Benzol from Gas".

Its a straight glass tube with indents in the bottom to support column material. You can use glass beads, ceramic rings, etc. Maybe more effective
than a vigreaux but has larger holdup.
You can also get distillation condensers with indents at the bottom so it can also be used as a fractionating column. The air jacket might also help
insulation.
