What to do with 1,4-dioxane tar

Will probably make some dioxane soon but I don't have any specific plans for disposing of the notorious black goo that ends up at the bottom of the flask. I've seen people just pour it down the sink, but given that the tar itself is probably the most toxic thing generated (liquid cancer?) I am not so sure that is the responsible thing to do.

What have other people done with their 1,4-tar? Any advice?
Thanks!

I'm actually somewhat curious about what you all would do with it as well. I plan to make some soon. I was just planning to neutralize it with bicarb, dillute it a ton and store it for future me to deal with, given the tar should just be organic crap, sulfuric acid and water.

Nuclear physics is neat. It's a shame it's so regulated...

Now that I think about it, that's probably a good thing. Still annoying though.

Bin it.

Soak it in paper or just scrape it off. Nowadays everything will be burned for energy anyway so no cancer landfills. Organic matter goes to trash, heavy metals and such stuff should be processed more specifically.

The one time I did this reaction I dissolved the tarry crap from my glassware tossed it in an open fire and swore off organic chemistry

I just dissolve it in H2SO4 as pour down directly to my sewerage well. After all they have sewerage treatment plants and it all should be neutralised. If I dumed it anywhere though, it would harm the environment.

That's a stupid idea, but not a big surprise given that polish amphetamine cooks just pour their HgCl2 solutions down the drain as well.

Comparison of Hg to dioxane tar is very brilliant as for you steve, I don't know how does one connect with the other.
I'm glad that amphetamine cooks in other countries don't do the same.
But after all, most of your countrymen users, still gobble up with polish amphetamine.

I just put it in a milk jug, planning on letting it sit there for the rest of eternity. Not really much else you can do, it’s just icky tar.

Now you're accusing Poles unwarrantly. It is a fact that all meth cooks around the world pour all their poisons down the drain, or to the closest ditch. They want you to fill paperwork if you take hazmat to a collection point, so that will keep the rogues spilling.

Sulfuric acid with organic waste down the drain is not bad. You pour organic waste and sulfuric acid down the drain anyway, usually in a situation when the organic waste clogs your loo and you unclog it with the acid. Healthy people just don't generally excrete significant amounts of heavy metals, so there's the difference.

I never leave waste lying around any longer than absolutely needed. I want to keep my equipment all tidy and order, and I go through my stocks periodically. I sometimes collect a bit more if I got some stuff to do, and then process it at once. I rarely handle stuff that couldn't be drained though.

Not ALL meth cooks.

Last I made dioxane, i disposed of the tar in a half gallon of white paint, which i let solidify, then binned it. Works nicely.

*edit* wish I had some nice Eastern Euro stims.......

*edit* or 2-C family..........

Do you feel comfortable with piranha? Turning it all to co2 is the most responsible way to dispose of it. But you have to be sure you can handle it properly. Burning it would be a good option if you can ensure complete combustion. The paint method would work they even sell a catalyst to harden paint fast, it’s so painters can dispose of old paint without it leaking in the landfill.

Fenton's reagent works on these things also well. And it is little bit more accessible for amateurs because getting conc. H2SO4 is problem in lots of countries.

Just got rid of some distillate char by collecting them when hot in a tin can and discarding it in trash. The rest was rinsed away easily with acetone.

Apple's and bowling balls Steve. Also completely irrelevant and
quite an unfair & disrespectful comparison
