Is this small vacuum pump good for buchner funnels?
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DYA21PU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b...
will it be powerful enough for vacuum filtration, until i can get a more expensive vacuum pump? it's really tiny, fits in your hand.

Yes it is, I have a very similar one I use for vacuum filtration and it works fine for this purpose.

It will do the job just fine. For filtration one does not really need a strong vacuum...a tiny bit will work wonders. You could couple it with a
variable DC voltage module to tune the speed. It does not really have to run full blast. Especially on long filtrations. Also you could power it with
a rechargeable lithium cell. Makes for a very compact mobile and "wireless" unit that can be used in locations where mains power is unavailable or
complicated to use.
Exact science is a figment of imagination.......

I had went to a shop where they sell aquarium items for ornamental fish. Can I use that item in place of vaccum pump?

@Cou: many people use that type of pump. But, you can find it or similar on ebay for less, I think.

I tried this as I have the exact pump in the instructable and it does in fact work and is reversible too.

I think those small cheap vacuum pumps are used by some when corrosive vapors are a problem and might damage an expensive vacuum pump.
Of cause these pumps also take damage but they are so cheap they can be easily and cheaply replaced.
I dont think they have very good vacuum but at least usable vacuum for filtration and some not so demanding destillations.
I wouldn´t count on them working for very long.
Another option would be to buy a waterpump and a aspirator, many choose this option as it is cheap and works pretty good.

Those 20 dollar Amazon pumps sound pretty good from some of the reviews.

Okay, so it's not an industrial vacuum pump, but I needed a portable vacuum pump to help wash, dry and purify chemical products on filter paper
through a 100 mL Buchner funnel and a 1L Erlenmeyer flask, and this vacuum pump is perfect for the job.
Hook it up with an in-line vacuum filter and it also works well with Nalgene 0.22 micron bottle top filters to sterilize oil

I confirm that it's good for buchner funnels, but doesn't lower air pressure enough for vacuum distillation.

I've been using a similar small pump for four years with a 90mm dia. Buchner funnel,
originally -80 kPa, but now -75 kPa or even -70 kPa when it needs a clean and oiling.
More than enough vacuum for filtering, you will not need to upgrade it.
I suggest that you buy extra tubing to connect from the exhaust port to somewhere outside;
- any noxious gasses will be safely removed
- the noise level will be lower
Before you buy a Buchner funnel research the cost and availability of filter papers,
I chose 90mm dia. because at the time that was the common size for cheap Chinese papers,
and they are still relatively cheap.
Buy some slow/fine/(equivalent to Whatman #3) and some fast/coarse/(equivalent to Whatman #1) papers as both are useful.
Buchner funnel filtering problems;
- top-heavy, I usually clamp my filter flask
- clamping also prevents the vaccum tubing from causing trouble
- the seal between the funnel and the flask, (I use a piece of silicone rubber sheet with a hole in it)
- often we need to filter a quantity of liquid greater than the filter flask capacity,
so we need an easy way to allow air in to to the flask to allow removal of the funnel,
to enable emptying (or changing) of the filter flask.
for me, the simplest is a not-too-tight connection of the vaccum tubing to the side arm of the flask.
