Cadmium Iodide (CdI2) For Sale!!!
Hey Everyone!
So much going on right now. In the middle of selling my house and buying another. I have been trying to find time and go through my chemicals and see
if there is anything I dont really need or want anymore. I will continue to post things as they come up, but right now I have 500g of Cadmium Iodide
that I would like to put up for sale.
$7/10g + shipping + PayPal fee
Let me know how much you want, or if you want to make an offer on the whole amount.
You will find this price a lot cheaper than you will likely find it anywhere.
I should be making 2.5kg of Methyl Tosylate available for purchase soon, too. It is a methylating agent with reactivity similar to methyl iodide and
dimethyl sulfate, and even fairs better in some reactions.

Purely out of interest what would you use Cadmium Iodide for, and are there any of these uses where it's much "better" than an alternative?

Well, off the top of my head I know it's used in photographic emulsions and helps to control the size of silver iodide due to the cadmium iodide being
less disassociated, so the available iodide is limited at any one point.
Also, it's an iodide salt that is soluble in water, ether, acetone, alcohols, and apparently in ammonia. So if you need a soluble salts for an
application, then this might work. It's a source of iodine, if that's what you're looking for.
It can be used in the preparation of organocadmium compounds, like dimethyl cadmium, which has its risks (toxic) but isn't as much of a pyro as
dimethyl zinc. I think there is a Rhodium/Erowid entry that uses dimethyl cadmium, as it will turn an aldehyde into a methyl ketone, not that I am
making an entry on Erowid a selling point, as that is not being condoned.
Let me see if I can get some more specifics for you.

Thanks Loptr for feeding my insatiable curiosity, I'm highly unlikely to ever get any (the number of "projects" on the list before then is huge!) but
it's widened my knowledge.

Yes, I will accept trades. Send me a PM with the proposed trade. I would also prefer to see pictures if you are able to provide them.

Alright, tell you what. Scratch the price. Just make an offer for an amount.
Also, trades are being accepted, but do expect to make the offer. If you have something interesting give it a shot! Let's see what you got.

The blogger Derek Lowe had some choice words about dimethyl cadmium: https://blogs.sciencemag.org/pipeline/archives/2013/05/08/th...
To summarize: Dimethyl cadmium, then, represents the demon plunked in the middle of the lowest circle as far as this element is concerned . . .
No, this compound appears to have no fan club whatsoever. Start one at your own risk.
