Digital pocket scale problem

I have bough a digital pocket scale like this from ebay and it can geigh up to 1000 g. In the past it was ok but no when i open it, it shows 1000.0 g. MODE does not do anything. When i press TARE it changes to 500.0 , 300.0 , 200.0 , 100.0 , and then back to 1000.0. The strange think is that if i close it and repoen while i have pressed the on/off button it works normally, but when i release it, it starts the same. Any thoughts ?

Perhaps you have engaged the calibration mode? Some scales have such option available. It shows the mass of the calibration weights that one is supposed to put on the scale when it runs through the cycle. Just a thought....

Exact science is a figment of imagination.......

I bet it's the calibration setting, there are only 3 buttons so try everything. To enter calibration mode on my balance I need to keep pressing on the mode button. Try keeping pressure on the mode button, then on the tare button and then on the on/off button, one of these 3 should work. If this fails try a combination of 2 buttons etc.
It shouldn't be hard on this cheap balances
