(Now you know!)

Limestone is mainly CaCO3, so...

2HCl + CaCO3 => CaCl2 + H2O + CO2

Eclectic - 15-10-2007 at 08:42

You have access to a computer and can't Google Limestone?

You are a upper level hazmat team guy in Iraq and don't know this off the top of your head? :o:o:o:o:o

Limestone is a mix of CaCO3 and MgCO3 ranging from 100% CaCO3 for calcite to 1:1 for dolomite

SsgtHAZMAT - 15-10-2007 at 08:54

Your are all right. I typed it on my way to the head and in a minor panic.

Took my piss and it hit me that I was a moron or at least you would all think I was. (again)

And yea, I actually cant get google here most of the time. I only get this site as I know the G6 guy. Amazing the crap they block.

And I am still in a minor panic.

Sarge is not an idiot or a moron. But he's not a chemist. He never pretended to be a chemist, that's why he comes to us for help when he needs it.

The military is infamous for taking truck drivers and making them brain surgeons, and vice versa.

Sarge has a hard science degree from a serious institurion but the science is not chemistry. It's physics. And he worked for a number of years in a serious scientific capacity. So I can tell you that he can run rings around most of us in his own disclipline. But not in chemistry.

well I can`t read the 1`st post obviously, but if I read that you have a large amount of this as usual to dispose of then Dont :)
keep it, it will be handy as a neutralising agent for some of the other Nasties you may encounter later.

rem that Chlorine you had a while ago? ;)

:)

The above question was "What is the formula for mixing HCL with limestone?"

The reason I needed to know was... lets just say a TON (or 20) hit the deck out here.

I wish I was back in BKK.......

Eclectic - 15-10-2007 at 10:03

I wasn't questioning Sarge's intelligence. Just "Military Intelligence".:P

So you want to neutralize aqueous HCl with limestone? Cause if it's just limestone, just spread it around or sweep it up and keep it to neutralize acids. For neutralizing that much HCl, you will probably get foaming and HCl fume if it's concentrated, so warn folks downwind, and maybe spray water mist for cooling and to keep down fumes.

Good to go. That's is what we did. It happened about 12 hours ago, I was just in a panic as the CoS was screaming for a sit rep.

I am missing the days when the Iraqis just shot at us....

chemrox - 15-10-2007 at 22:14

How did the HCl get dispersed?

I wonder why HCl?? Just happened to fall off the truck? One of ours no doubt.

I'm biting hard on my typing tongue! No politics here.

Anyway, don't feel bad .. I get excited about something, shoot totally from the hip and get slammed by some of the chem-saints who sit here and watch for mistakes. And that's a good thing .. keeps misconceptions from getting promulgated...

HCl is used in water treatment plants. And we actually had nothing to do with it other than the responce.
