Is the hardest part of making aerogels DIY the extraction of the water/alcohol from the sol-gel with supercritical CO2?

not_important - 26-5-2007 at 22:08

You don't need supercritical extraction, see US patents 5565142 and 5680713 for example.

An e-book on the subject of sol-gels has recently been added to the collection on www.gigapedia.org.

Much appreciation, thankyou.

Have you got a link? A search on gigapedia returned nothing.

Just ran across this while looking for something else ,
but thought it should be added here .

So, has anyone here actually made Aerogels without supercritical CO2 yet? (I mean without them falling to bits).

Spargine - 13-1-2008 at 16:44

Actually, someone did. http://homepages.cae.wisc.edu/~aerogel/aboutaerogel.html

They even supercritically dried out jello, making an edible aerogel.

The_Davster - 13-1-2008 at 17:35

I like! I wonder if those are just standard steel pipe parts, or if they are high pressure rated?

Well 'they' used supercritical CO2 and are not members of this forum.

Just came across these videos on YouTube. This guys whole channel is really amazing and he explains everything in detail- very ingenious guy!

Anyhow, making aerogel, video #1 and #2:
