It seems like when synthesis are written, the authors are often times very unclear on certain things. That, or I am just so lacking in information
that I can't make sense out of it on my own (probably the latter).
Let's say a certain synthesis requires something to be washed with 5% sodium bicarbonate solution. No further information is given on if it is 5% by
weight, volume, solubility, et cetera. Can someone help clarify this for me?
Specifically for a 5% sodium bicarbonate solution, which one would make more sense?

If no other information is given then it is by weight of
the solution.

furthurmore, the example you give of say "three 50mL portions of 5% Na2CO3 soln." (I'm aware that it's
just an example) could just be translated to "as many splashes of a dilute, weak base as you think". Percentages rarely make or break a reaction.
