Sugar from wood, Friedrich Bergius

Recently I reminded myself reading about a process of hydrolising wood to yield sugar used in germany in later stages of WWII to support food production. I found that it was invented by Friedrich Bergius. There are some references for wood saccharification on the web but of course most of them behind paywalls. Does anyone here know how the process looks like today and how efficient is it? IIRC Bergius used dilute HCl and mild heating
