1. What is the solubility of Iron oxide, or Iron acetate or Iron III chloride in such a solvent? Any educated guesses?
2. Is it possible to prepare Glyoxal through Acetaldehyde without using nitric acid?

1. no idea, but since commercial glyoxal is an aqueous solution (40% glyoxal usually) I think it highly likely that ferric chloride is soluble in
glyoxal solution. Anhydrous glyoxal I don't know about.
2. Yes use selenium dioxide but if you can't get nitric acid then SeO2 is probably even less helpful.
