Sciencemadness Discussion Board

Why was the board down?

RogueRose - 9-2-2018 at 13:18

Couldn't get to the board for at least an hour (could have been up to 4 as I didn't try for some time before). It said something was wrong with the config.php.

Was this a planned upgrade/date or maintenance or are we under attack like PhD said.

there needs to be an off-site place of communication for the forum like an ICQ server (old school I know, but I'm not sure what else can be run easily).

Maybe we should talk about this and if you need help with security, there are a lot of people here that know a little about server admin that my be able to lend a hand - if you just ask.

Maybe even a Twitter account where a status update could be posted if there are problems so people could at least have an idea of what is going on.

Either way, hope all is well and this wasn't malicious.

There was some kind of database connectivity issue; my guess is that the server was overloaded.

Polverone - 9-2-2018 at 13:28

I was running a database backup.

JJay - 9-2-2018 at 13:29

That makes sense.

Melgar - 9-2-2018 at 23:36

Whew. Was on the edge of my seat for a while there.

Vosoryx - 9-2-2018 at 23:50

Yeah I was going to ask. Glad someone else did it for me.

Maybe if there could be a notice beforehand so we don't all get scared half to death? :)

Somerhing like a facebook page has been discussed-

NEMO-Chemistry - 10-2-2018 at 09:48

Facebook???

Fuck that please stay old school, just say I am going to ruin your day and do a back up.

Why does it take over an hour to back up? you tried upgrading to a Pentium 4:D

There should be a YouTube channel!

Diachrynic - 10-2-2018 at 10:10

I totally like that idea, but as YT currently loves to shoot science channel doing mildly dangerous stuff in the knee. Just saying, they could kill the thing in one go.

Or do you mean in the way of notification-thing? Sounds interesting.

Perhaps a tasteful test pattern?

I've noticed that YouTube seems to give a lot more leeway to videos with disclaimers and attention to safety. But you do have a good point: who wants to be held at the whim of a single YouTube administrator, especially one who might be biased against chemistry.

It really does seem like the best video archiving site. I'm not sure if it is possible to put videos on the Wiki....

Bert - 10-2-2018 at 10:19

BTW, screw Youtube unless you're trying to monetize it.

Vimeo is better.

Texium - 10-2-2018 at 11:44

The idea of a collective YouTube channel is one that has been floated and attempted numerous times over the years. It wasn't successful due to the challenges of long distance collaboration, and the fact that many members already had their own channels to promote. And since they're the ones with the most experience making videos and managing a YouTube channel, the ones left to manage the collective channel were the less experienced, and often less motivated remainder. It's a nice idea, but in practice it doesn't seem to get anywhere.

Diachrynic - 10-2-2018 at 11:54

This seems to be a common thing - over at the ld-bord I'm active in they also had the idea to pull of a collective channel. Lots of discussion, but it never really got anywhere and was buried under other threads and forgotten.

Next time you think some website may be inaccessible just to you, you can check is it website's problem or your problem using: http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com
Yesterday indeed website was not accessible for one hour to everyone. Don't worry, website's reachability is tested from many different countries, and result is only "it's just for you" if all countries from which test is performed can reach it.

As for youtube, my advice is to simply keep using youtube as we are using it, and only post links to them here, in one thread or even newly made by mods category called Videos. I mean, people want subscribers and fame everywhere, and not just here.
