OTC source of sodium dithionite and synthesis

If anyone is needing this chemical I found a source although it is not pure but as long as the other chemicals do not interfer
Carbona color run remover ingredients
In the laundry detergent isle
15 to 30% sodium dithionite
Optical brighteners
Perfumes
Linalool
Lemonene

Also can be made from sodium bisulfite
NaHSO3 + Zn → Na2S2O4 + Zn(OH)2

Synthysis

I wouldn't bother my ass starting from this, it's just toooo contaminated with toooo many different compounds.

The way I see it there are a few options to dithionite.......

1. Just buy it on eBay
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Jacquard-Sodium-Hydrosulfite-Hydro...

2. Make it using Chemplayer's method in your first link.
I would be inclined to make the dihydrate with anhydrous ethanol and
use it straight away........... Unless one can be absolutely sure the
impure solution does not interfere with your chosen substrate.

But like Chemplayer says, there is room for improvement and experimentation here. Definately try both ways.

What is very interesting is at the very end of the clip, it is mentioned -
"Sodium dithionite is apparently stabillized by a low pH when in aqueous solution (but they haven't tested this).

This sounds like the winning ticket.
I found two MSDS's for 'Carbona Color Run Remover' and neither contained the list of components you posted........

BUT......It gets much better than that........!!

1. "Carbona Color Run Remover MSDS"
contains -
Sodium Dithionite........ 60-80%
Sodium Carbonate........20-40%

2. "Carbona Color Run Remover Material Safety Data Sheet"
contains -
Sodium Dithionite........50-100%
Sodium Carbonate........25-50%

"How separate sodium dithionite & sodium carbonate" - http://chemistry.mdma.ch/hiveboard/acquisition/000429858.htm...

and

"Stabilized sodium dithionite solutions" - http://www.google.ch/patents/US3985674

PS - I wouldn't bother with Shiva Chemists method

PPS - This has been touched on before..........
"how can I separate Sodium hydrosulfite and sodium bisulfite mixture?" - https://www.sciencemadness.org/whisper/viewthread.php?tid=72...

Thiourea dioxide can do similar chemistry and is readily available cheaply and relatively pure. See: http://www.dharmatrading.com/chemicals/dharmas-dyehouse-colo...

It can be purified by the method provided in this paper: http://www.sciencemadness.org/talk/files.php?pid=440754&...
