Everyone "knows" that hydrogen cyanide smells "like bitter almonds." But I always thought that was only vaguely accurate.
I was recently next to an open bottle of a liqueur called Hpnotiq when I was overcome by a distinct sense of "oh shit, we're all going to die." I
realized that I thought I was smelling hydrogen cyanide, and that it was coming from the bottle of Hpnotiq. I'm wondering if others agree that
Hpnotiq smells exactly like prussic acid.
1. Do you know first hand what HCN smells like?
2. To what degree do you think that Hpnotiq liqueur smells like HCN?unionised - 26-3-2017 at 10:41
Do you know what benzaldehyde smells like? lysander - 26-3-2017 at 11:29
I have real (not synthetic) "oil of bitter almond" extract in my kitchen. If it matches that, then it smells (to me) distinctly different
from both HCN and Hpnotiq.
