Are there any pleochroic substances which are easy to synthesize and crystallize?

Isolate acetylsalicylic acid from an aspirin tablet with isopropanol. Quick, easy, and cheap

Slighty off topic, but if you're at it anyway: Birefringence of tri glycine di-sulfate is also cool. glycine sulfate is easy to grow into big
crystals.

In the inorganic realm, you could try hexamolybdato manganese. Just the addition of ammoniumparamolybdate to a solution of an Mn2+ salt will do.
Some crystals will appear yellow and some red under polarised light, depending on orientation.

What solvent should i use for crystalization of that manganese salt?

The reaction runs in water.
A picture of the phenomenon by a fellow-amateur chemist can be found in the thread on the Dutch forum.
