other than producing uPVC, is there any not too complicated, interesting use for sodium polysulfide or ethylene chloride (I assume 1,2-dichloroethane)

Sodium polysulfide with an ammonium salt can probably be used to convert aryl ketones to an isomerized amide-- for example it converts acetophenone to
phenylacetamide. This is the Willgerodt rearrangement: ammonium polysulfide is more common but the combination should work as well. Be sure to safely
destroy the H2S produced!
