Aldehydes are stronger reducing agents and reduce (i) silver(I) ion to silver metal, (ii) the blue solution of the Cu2+ complex changes to the brown/brick red colour of insoluble copper(I) oxide Cu2O (Note: aromatic aldehydes do NOT give a result with Benedict's/Fehling's reagent). So (b)(i) and (ii) can be used to distinguish aldehydes and ketones. Note that reducing sugars give a positive test too. |
