Things people are looking for thread

Dr.Bob - 30-1-2016 at 08:43

Folks, just an idea, but people often post a new thread when they want something (chemical, equipment, source for supplies) or mention it in a random thread. Would it be useful to have one thread dedicated to people looking to find a particular item?

So if JoeChemist wants a 3L round bottom, he can say so, or if John is looking for some potassium iodide, he can list what he wants and how much he would be willing to pay for it. The key things are to list what country you are in (maybe even what section, for postage purposes), what the item(s) are, how much you are interested in paying, and what specifics you are looking for, like brand, size, etc. For people with large lists of things to buy or sell, this might be ideal, but for people that just are looking for a few things, that might be a quick place to post it.

If this does not seem reasonable, the moderators can delete or the members can just ignore it, and the thread will fade away.

Good idea, but the major problem I see is how to note when requests have been filled. I don't believe you can edit/delete posts after a few days, and deletion would quickly result in a weirdly fragmented thread. I don't see a great way to manage such a thread.

Another idea would be to put requests in your signature. It's consistent across all posts and can be edited indefinitely. Everybody would have a "wanted" section in their sig. The problem with this, of course, is that threads could become monstrously long with more signature text than posted text!

Use the wiki

in the entry "Ethanol"

Create a thread
"looking for Absolute Ethanol"

1 thread for each item

link them together in the wiki with a link to the thread.

As a maintenance item, when a thread overgrows, make another and point the link to it.

I will do an example tonight.
