Buying Phosphorous Pentoxide

TheChemiKid - 27-8-2014 at 18:27

I was interested in getting some Phosphorus Pentoxide for my lab, as it is a very useful chemical. If anyone is selling smallish quantities, please U2U me.
Otherwise, if a large quantity of people are interested, maybe I could place a bulk order, and sell smaller quantities to other people.
If you are interested in this, please say so.

I would be interested. Or polyphosphoric acid.

Edit: Now that I actually look, phosphorus pentoxide is available from a few sellers on ebay for decent price.

I remember finding a source quite a while ago (1 year+) for phosphorus pentoxide that was extremely well priced and could be purchased easily, but can't for the life of me remember the name of it. I am sure that if you search around for a while you could find the same one I did, if it is still around.

There was an interesting thread awhile back on dehydrating phosphoric acid to its various stages of polymer/dehydration.

http://www.sciencemadness.org/talk/viewthread.php?tid=4409

And although I cannot find the thread at the moment there was another thread around that time where the prepared dehydrated acid was used in a synthesis, perhaps of sulfur trioxide. At the time I thought we were on the cusp of something really interesting since the dehydrating strength of the material was high, raw materials were easy to come by, and production was relatively easy however it's another piece of information lost to the flow of the forum it seems.

Chemdreamland-eu on eBay sells phosphorus pentoxide at a decent price. It is from Poland but I have never had issues ordering it here in Canada.

Yeah, I saw that. If I bought a larger quantity from there, and saved on shipping, I could resell the P4O10 for a cheaper price, let me go check the shipping.

EDIT: If I bought a larger quantity of the P4O10, I could resell it for these prices:
$0.07/g for quantities under 50g
$0.065/g for quantities under 125g
$0.0631/g for quantities over 125g
Shipping would be $5.80 for If you want it in a multilayer plastic bag, and $12.35 if you want it in a bottle.

If you are interested please post that you are, or U2U me. I can only do this at these prices if enough people contact me.

hi,i am a P2O5 manufacturer

Magpie - 8-3-2016 at 10:57

P2O5 is a chemical I thought I would never be able to make. I needed some for a synthesis of acetonitrile so ordered some off eBay, from the Polish seller. It was priced well and well packaged. It was inspected by US Customs, however. I had to go to the US Post Office to pick it up.

I also used it to dehydrate chloroform when making PCl5. I agree that it is likely a very useful reagent.

I use P4O10 when ampouling gases, which I make by aqueous reactions (e.g. ONBr, ONCl, Cl2, NO2). I mix 1 part of P4O10 with 4 to 5 parts of hardware store CaCl2 and use this mix to dry the gases. It works exceptionally well. Without the drying, the ampoules develop some haze on the inside of condensed water, with the drying, the ampoules remain perfectly clear inside.

Firefox-fx has phosphorus pentoxide for $21/lb, about six times cheaper than anything I currently see on eBay:

Yes, 5 cents/g; this is awesome. I didn't discover this source until long after I bought mine from Poland.

As I recall, these folks are in Idaho. Driving distance for those of us in the Pacific North-West.
You could potentially make up a big list, and take a road trip. Thereby avoiding touchy shipping regulations, and expensive shipping charges.

Pyrotechnics guys. And, more largely governed by ATF restrictions, than anything else.

They have a good reputation.

Will probably want Drivers License information, so as to make sure you aren't a terrorist type.

Best prices.

Pocatello is a long way from anywhere in the PNW except Boise, even then it's a several hours drive. My brother lived in Pocatello for many years until he retired. Then he moved to northern Idaho, at least 8 hours away. If I would have known about Firefox then I would have picked up some goodies on my rare visits to that remote corner of the state. ;)

They do ship, and their shipping and handling charges aren't bad.
