New Ethanol Source in UK

weeksie98 - 13-5-2014 at 22:17

Hi chaps,

I've been searching for ethanol in the uk for a while now, to save me the trouble of distillation. Suddenly, I find a website called 'farmaline' is selling a bottle of '96% Ethyl Alcohol - Drinkable' on its website, in GBP. Doesn't this sound a little weird considering I can find nothing else like it anywhere?

Anyway, just a heads up to anyone looking for 96% Ethyl Alcohol in the UK, I found it here: http://www.farmaline.co.uk/health/order/fagron-ethylalcohol-...

Kind of pricy - 1L for ~$85? :(

I've never bought ethanol before, but I'm approaching preparations where I need pure ethanol, and if this is the price tag I'm looking at I think I'm going to cry. I live in US anyways, so this is probably not going to work for me. Still, this is the first "undenatured" high concentration ethanol I've seen.

It sounds like what was called "Rectified spirits". The reason for the high price is because it is not denatured with methanol or anything and has duty added to the price.

In USA, about $17.00/750ml for 190 proof Everclear.

Good solvent, shake with an appropriate dehydrator to get closer to 100%.

Drink it? Not personally...

"The alcoholic beverage called Everclear is illegal to sell in 14 states. These states are California, Florida, Maine, Massachusetts, Hawaii, Iowa, Michigan, New York, Nevada, Ohio, Washington, North Carolina, New Hampshire and Minnesota. Although it is legal in Virginia, it is not sold there due to the fact that the state liquor stores cannot sell any type of a grain alcohol that lacks flavor or color. The reason it is illegal is because it contains such a high percentage of alcohol. Everclear is 190 proof and is 95.6 percent ethanol alcohol and 4.4 percent water. This combination makes for an extremely powerful combination.Everclear has been listed in the Guinness World Book of Records as the most alcoholic drink. Guinness listed it in 1979 and has since banned any alcohol entries in their publications. There is a 151 proof of Everclear that is legally sold in California, Iowa, Florida, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Washington and West Virginia."

It just seems a little shady that this website advertises it as drinkable when it is clearly intended for laboratory or medical use. I mean I wouldn't dream of drinking something from a bottle like that. I think I'll be sticking to distilled denatured for most of my projects...

In California, Everclear is only 75%. Obviously you can distill it to 95% and then dehydrate the rest. Or drive to Nevada and buy the 95% stuff.

The UK source sounds more like a Honey Trap to me.

In the past I had bought some 190 Everclear via the Internet but since this post I was curious if things had changed now. So I wrote Wine Chateau a letter yesterday if they would sell to me in Florida where only 151 is sold. Just now I received this response. I guess I'm not buying it in Florida and that's the crux of it.

Hello,

We do ship 190 Everclear to FL.

Thank you!

Bioethanol?

Dan Vizine - 14-8-2014 at 12:04

E-bay is offering absolute ethanol in 1 gal through 5 gal sizes, or was last time I looked. Gold Shield brand, same kind we used in the lab.
