Hi.
I am looking to make silver nitrate with purity over 99.9%. I don't know much about the processes taken for making reagents of high purity in a lab
and what measures must be taken. I am starting with a silver coin that I have with declared purity of .9999 (4nine pure), I let it sit in 30% HCl for
5 minutes to remove the surface tarnish, and then rinsed well. I make the nitric acid at home by distilling from sulfuric and a nitrate salt inside a
retort and then diluted to 60% with distilled water.
My question is this. The most I have done for cleaning glassware is maybe rinsing with HCl, hot water or ethanol/acetone and then finally rinsing with
distilled water and allowing to air dry. Using pure and clean silver and nitric acid (distilled) my end product should be at least 99.9% pure, using
clean utensils and such, correct?

99.9% pure by what? Metals?

Yes. However, extra steps such as recrystallization couldn't hurt.
What's up with the purity issue, anyway? Do you need to sell it to someone?
