This is in the ACS practice exam and we didnt learn this crap
When equal volumes of the following pairs of liquids are
mixed thoroughly and allowed to stand, which pair is
most likely to separate into two layers?
(A) ethanol and methanol
(B) carbon tetrachloride and methanol
(C) hexane and pentane
(D) carbon tetrachloride and hexane

Being a total novice, my guess is (B). Carbon tetrachloride is a non-polar molecule while methanol is a polar one. It's like water and oil: they don't
mix because of their polarity.
Because of this they would split in two layers, but i may be wrong.

Really? Your class didn't go over this stuff? Pretty important concepts, there.
Generally, like dissolves like. Think about each one in terms of whether it is polar or non-polar, protic or aprotic. That should face you in the
right direction, at least.
