Isolating tert-Butyl from a solution of petroleum distilate.

Injector cleaner contains 10% tert-butyl and 50% petroleum distillates...doesn't say what the other 40% is... hopefully it won't cause problems. Since they boil at around the same temperature distillation won't work. I don't have a freezer that can go to -30c.

I figure i could form tert-butyl chloride and distil that off at 51c, but still i think petrolium will come over. I think extracting with water could work. Then distilling the t-butyl out of the water, t-butyl will go into aqueous phase, distill till 100c, then deal with the azeotrope with freezing and CaO

Sound ok?

I presume you are talking about tert-butyl alcohol although you have not explicitely said so.

Your both ideas should work. Extraction with water is straight forward as TBA is completely miscible with it. However separation of azeotrope will be messy.

While converting TBA into TBC, when you add HCl, TBA being miscible with HCl, I think it will go into bottom aquous layer and hydrocarbon layer will float onto it. You can separate the bottom layer and salt-out TBC by addition of adequate quantity of anhydrous CaCl2.

A lot will however depend on what that balance 40% material is.

Can you buy dry ice, and denatured alcohol? That should get you down to the -30 C you need just fine.

Where can I find this injector cleaner?

Wynns hot shot injector cleaner with octane booster.

And this is the only Wynn's product that contains tert-butyl? I have a hard time tracking it down, even on Amazon or EBay.
