Making Ion-exchange resin

plante1999 - 16-11-2012 at 18:43

I'm interested in Ion exchange resin. Ion exchange resin usualy come in 4 varient:

Strongly acidic
Strongly basic
Weakly acid
Weakly basic

Because I do mostly inorganic chemistry I'm more interested into the strongly varent, especially the acidic one.

Strongly acidic resin are made from crosslinked polystyrene sulphonate. Styrene and divinyl bensene is polymerized.
From what I read the crosslinking is to make the polymer more stable and chemicaly resistant. From this standpoint non-cropsslinked polystyrene sulphonate could be made and used as resin.

Strongly basic are based upon quaternery ammonium salt polystyrene.

I did this thread to discuss about preparation of the resin, the uses and the synthesis of the precursor to the resins.

Thanks!!!
