I have a hydrometer with a somewhat weird scale. Putting it in clear water it exactly levels to the thick 'METHANOL' line, but what do the numbers
-1.2, -1.7, -2.3, etc. mean ?

I think it's for antifreeze.
Adding ethylene glycol to water will raise the density of the solution.
Adding methanol will lower the density.
The scales are calibrated in freezing points.
