Drying of Magnesium Sulfate

achem500 - 8-8-2012 at 12:40

Earlier I bought a bag of magnesium sulfate to use as a drying agent, which I cooked in the oven at 450 F for 45 minutes. When I took it out, it had formed a hard cake that fell out of the tray like a piece of tile. Is this normal? Any help is appreciated.

Yes, this is normal. Just crush it up to maximize surface area and store it in a tightly-sealed container.

You may wish to bake for slightly longer in the future, though, just to be absolutely sure that all of the water has been lost.
