Pretty much every example I have seen or read on the Etard reaction uses either chloroform or carbon tetrachloride as solvent. I have heard that
DCM would work well as a solvent in this reaction, but I've never seen it used. I've heard that DMSO might also work for this reaction.
I'm more interested in the oxidation of toluenes than alcohols, if that makes a difference.
Does anyone here have any practical experience with this reaction that can weigh in? Any comments are welcome.
