Soduim bromide is sold at most stores as hth spa Brom-Start and can be treated with HCL acid to produce Hbr gas bubbled into distilled H2O to produce
47.6% HBr acid.
2 grams Benzyl Acohol and 6 grams of concentrated HBr acid are mixed and slowly heated to 60 C for about 20 minutes. It will separate into two layers,
the yield of Benzyl Bromide is around 70% bp. 198-199 C.
39.701 ml of Ethanol is added to 5.293 ml of Hydrogen Peroxide 30% in a reaction flask while stiring.
Into this is added 2 grams Benzyl Bromide and refluxed for 3 hours - allowed to cool – 89% yeild of Benzaldehyde
The boiling point of Benzyl Bromide is 198-199 C and Benzaldehyde 178.1 C, distill at 180 C and excess Benzyl Bromide comes off and Benzaldehyde
remains behind.
