I am on the hunt for a Hitachi R 1200 NMR spectrometer. I have been buying lots of equipment lately and I am in the market for one of these
instruments. Are there any members in the United States that own one of these instruments or know some one that may be willing to sell one?

I am planning on purchasing a Hitachi R-1200 NMR spectrometer in less then two weeks. I have heard that fixed magnet spectrometers can be difficult
to move due to the weight of the magnet which can cause it to collapse if jarred. I will be transporting the instrument approximately 1000 miles.
Apparently there is special shipping hardware that goes inside of the magnet to stabilize it. Does anyone know what this shipping hardware looks like
and the dimensions? Does anyone by chance have the shipping hardware for one of these instruments? Has anyone on this forum moved a fixed magnet NMR
spectrometer? I need help as soon as possible.

Moved a fixed magnet nmr a floor down and around thirty meters across. It was a heavy bastard, we used an engine hoist thing to lift it onto a Piano
type trolley. The building had lifts so there were no stairs.
Best advice I can offer is to telephone directly a large scientific surplus company and ask someone who does it often. If they're at all cluey the
conversation should uncover the major pitfalls you will encounter.
Good luck, moving stuff like this is always stressful.

I paid $500 for the instrument I purchased. All of the electronics work, I am now waiting to get a shunt key so that I can adjust the magnet to find
the signal.

Here are a few pictures of my new NMR spectrometer. The shunt key, and other accessories arrived yesterday. I hope to get the instrument running over
Christmas weekend.

First Proton NMR Taken in a Garage?
It will be about a week until I can post the spectra since I don't have a scanner
I got my Hitachi R1200 NMR spectrometer to
work and I ran several spectra yesterday on some ferrocene derivatives I
have prepared, including 1-ferrocenylethanol and Bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene.
It works quite nicely and the spectra are very similar to
those on the Aldrich website for these compounds. I am trying to find the
plotter pens for the plotter, I made an improvised one out of a ball point
pen, but it does not work that well. The spectrometer signal drifts
rapidly due to the fluctuating temperature, but I can get acceptable
spectra running a 30 second scan. The instrument did not require a lot of
adjustment to find the water signal, but I adjusted a bunch of the shims
to increase the signal and resolution. I will have to scan the spectra and upload them when I can get access to a scanner.

Here is a picture of a spectrum on the oscilloscope screen of a methanol + tetramethylsilane standard. The tetramethylsilane peak is hard to see and
the TMS peak has not been referenced to 0.00 ppm. After 3 days, the instrument has settled down and the signal is not drifting very much.
Here are the Golay controls for shimming the magnet.

Sample tube inserted in spinner and shunt key for adjusting shunt bar.
60 mHz 1HNMR spectrum of aldol condensation product of vanillin and acetone. Intermediate in the synthesis of zingerone. This spectrum was obtained
with a 30 second scan and correlation on this instrument. Sample was dissolved in deuterated chloroform, tetramethylsilane was added for reference
since the residual chloroform peak is not distinguishable. A Perkin Elmer infrared spectrophotometer pen was used in the plotter, this seems to work
fairly well.
