I'm looking at a reference right now that refers to "серняги", which I am pretty sure is a common russian
name for something simple, but I'm having some trouble finding out what.
Anyone here know what it is?

A bit of hacking with Google Translate leads me to make the hypothesis that your original text may have a typo in it.

As far as I know, серняги is a slang name for cерная
кислота, better known as sulfuric acid in English.

I speak Russian, and that word doesn't ring a bell, probably a typo. Sulfuric acid is "серная
кислота" and the slang for that is "серняга".

This most certainly is the answer. Thank you!
