I am looking to buy 200-500g of anhydrous aluminum chloride for a synthesis. Does anyone know either a good place to source this or have some
anhydrous AlCl3 they are willing to part with?

The attached ref gives procedures for the preparation of anhydrous FeCl2 and CrCl2. Either of these may then be used for the preparation of AlCl3.
Both are easier to make than anhydrous ZnCl2, which usually requires NH3 or HCl gas.
CuCl2, the easiest anhydrous transition metal halide, gives an excessively energetic reaction and contamination with CuAlCl4 byproduct. However, iron
and chromium do not form a +1 state without extreme coaxing, and (especially Cr) should release significantly less energy.
Formation enthalpies (more negative = less vigorous rxn):
CrCl2: -395 kJ/mol
FeCl2: -341 kJ/mol
CuCl2: -205 kJ/mol
ZnCl2: -415 kJ/mol
FeCl2 dissolves in a number of aprotic solvents, although retrieving AlCl3 from these solvents may not be trivial, as it forms strong complexes with
many of them.
