Reaction of calcium sulfate hemihydrate and sodium bicarbonate

Hi

Does anyone know why calcium sulfate hemihydrate and sodium bicarbonate react in water? Some gas is formed but I do not know what type of gas it is.

Gas is CO2.

But I would be surprised if CaSO4 will react with NaHCO3, because Ca(HCO3)2 is more soluble than CaSO4. Did you heat up a mixture? If yes, NaHCO3 decompose in to Na2CO3, CO2 and H2O. Na2CO3 then react with CaSO4 to form CaCO3 and Na2SO4.
