Stir plate magnet strength?

monolithic - 9-2-2020 at 10:17

I own a Corning PC-351 and I like it aside from the stir plate magnet, which seems to be a bit weak. I sometimes have trouble forming a vortex with my 1000 ml round bottom flasks, even with an oval shaped stir bar.

I notice that some brand of hot plates rate the stirring capacity of their hot plates. The IKA RCT, for example, is rated at 20 liters for "Stirring quantity max. per stirring position (H2O)." Is this actually true? I don't need anywhere near 20 liters, but having a much stronger magnet would be useful, especially when used RCTs aren't very expensive.

Check your stir bar first, they get demagnetized over time.

I considered that but I've only used these stir bars a few dozen times at most, at temperatures between 50 C and 150 C.
